Fire TV setup

Setting up dotBlast on an Amazon Fire TV device is straightforward and turns your TV into an information display. Follow these steps to get your dashboard showing on Fire TV.

Prerequisites

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick or Fire TV (2nd generation or newer)
  • dotBlast account with at least one dashboard created
  • Internet connection on both your Fire TV and management device

Step-by-step setup

Method 1: Using the Silk Browser (built-in)

  1. From your Fire TV home screen, navigate to “Apps”
  2. Look for “Silk Browser” (Amazon’s web browser) - install it if not present
  3. Open Silk Browser
  4. In the address bar, type: https://dotblast.app/view
  5. You should see a 6-digit PIN displayed on screen
  6. On your computer or phone (where you manage dotBlast):
    • Go to the Devices page (/devices)
    • Enter the 6-digit PIN from your Fire TV
    • Click “Link Device”

Method 2: Using Firefox for Fire TV

  1. From your Fire TV home screen, navigate to “Apps”
  2. Search for and install “Firefox for Fire TV”
  3. Open Firefox
  4. Go to https://dotblast.app/view
  5. Follow steps 5-6 from Method 1 above to link the device

Optimization tips for Fire TV

Display settings

  1. Go to Fire TV Settings > Display & Sounds > Display
  2. Set resolution to match your TV’s native resolution (usually 1080p or 4K)
  3. Consider setting “Display refresh rate” to 60Hz for smooth updates

Power and sleep settings

  1. Go to Settings > Preferences
  2. Adjust “Sleep After” to “Never” or a long duration (requires ADB debugging or third-party apps)
  3. For permanent displays, consider using a micro USB power adapter instead of TV USB port

Remote control considerations

  • Fire TV remotes put the device to sleep quickly
  • Consider using a wireless keyboard with touchpad for easier navigation
  • Some users prefer voice commands via Alexa (“Alexa, open Silk Browser”)

Troubleshooting

Common issues

  • “Page unresponsive”: Try clearing browser cache in Silk Browser settings
  • Display not updating: Ensure your Fire TV has internet connection and try refreshing the page
  • Audio interference: If using TV speakers, consider muting or lowering volume as dotBlast doesn’t use audio
  • Remote keeps sleeping screen: Install an app like “Caffeine” or use ADB commands to disable sleep

Performance optimization

  • Close unused apps to free up memory
  • Restart Fire TV periodically for best performance
  • Ensure your dashboard isn’t overly complex (too many widgets can slow older Fire TV models)

Alternative approaches

Using screen mirroring

  1. Ensure your Fire TV and mobile device/computer are on the same network
  2. On Fire TV: Hold Home button > Mirroring
  3. On your device: Cast/screen mirror to Fire TV
  4. Open dotBlast on your device and navigate to your dashboard
  5. Note: This method uses more battery and may have slight lag

Using a dedicated kiosk mode

For permanent installations:

  1. Enable Developer Options on Fire TV (Settings > My Fire TV > About > click Build 7 times)
  2. Turn on ADB debugging
  3. Use ADB commands to launch Silk Browser in kiosk mode pointing to your dotBlast URL
  4. This prevents users from exiting the browser or changing settings

Maintenance

  • Check for Fire TV system updates regularly
  • Keep Silk Browser or Firefox updated
  • Periodically verify the device remains linked in your dotBlast Devices page
  • If unlinked, simply repeat the linking process above

Once successfully linked, your Fire TV will display your dashboard and update automatically whenever you save changes. Enjoy your new information display!
